Wine Talk

Texas Wine
2020 Artist Blend-William Chris Vineyards titled "Vigne Monarque"
Since 2018 this wine has been a single vineyard wine from the grapes that grow right down the street from the vineyard, in the small town of Stonewall, Texas. Fermented separately in large format oak fermenter. Aged separately in a combination of 20% new French and E. European oak barriques for 20 months. This wine pairs best with triple cream cheese with mustard seed relish and a game sausage with black pepper.
Other Wine
De La Montanya Russian River Valley Syrah
Critic tasting note: (2003 vintage) "Features an elegant interplay of raspberry fruit and herbal (dried thyme, oregano) notes, picking up hints of bittersweet chocolate on the finish. Supple and creamy in the mouth, ending with soft tannins.

De La Montanya Vineyards & Winery is a small family owned boutique winery and vineyards located in Healdsburg, California in Sonoma County.

Our Favorite Reads For June

Drita's Pick- "Before The Coffee Gets Cold"
In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a cafe which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.
In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the cafe’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by Alzheimer's, see their sister one last time, and meet the daughter they never got the chance to know. But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the cafe, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold .

Another great read!

Missy's Pick - "Unoffendable"
It turns out giving up your "right" to be offended can be one of the most freeing, healthy, simplifying, relaxing, refreshing, stress-relieving, encouraging things you can do. It's a radical, provocative idea: We're not entitled to get offended or stay angry. The idea of our own "righteous anger" is a myth. It is the number one problem in our societies today and, as Dallas Willard says, Christians have not been taught out of it. But what if Christians were the most unoffendable people on the planet?
In Unoffendable you will find concrete, practical ways to live life with less stress, including:
  • Adjusting your expectations to fit human nature
  • Replacing perpetual anger with refreshing humility and gratitude
  • Embracing forgiveness and beginning to love others in unexpected ways
In a humorous and conversational style, Unoffendable seeks to lift religious burdens from our backs and allow us to experience the joy of gratitude, perhaps for the first time, every single day of our lives—flourishing the way God intended.

Gardening Guide

Michael's tips-
Bexar county occupies a unique growing zone, where the South Texas Desert, Rolling Coastal Plains, and Rocky Hill Country converge. Our area provides distinctive challenges and opportunities for the green thumbed gardener. I seem to always get busy and forget to plant my seeds in the ground at the recommended time, but thankfully there are several nurseries around town to buy seedlings from; Rainbow Gardens is a favorite of mine. The Bexar County Master Gardeners program has a wealth of information for everyone from the beginner to the seasoned pro.
Here’s what they say to plant in June:
  • Okra seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Spinach seeds (Malabar or New Zealand)
  • Most varieties of peppers (start from seed and transplant in July)
  • Tomatoes (start from seed and transplant in July)

Binge-worthy TV!

Jessica's Pick - "Queen Charlotte"
The spin-off miniseries revolving around Queen Charlotte consists of 2 plot lines: one in the present of Bridgerton, beginning in 1817 with the death of the royal heir Princess Charlotte, an event that causes the Queen to pressure her children to marry and produce another royal heir; the other begins in 1761 with Charlotte meeting and marrying King George. The latter explores the King and Queen's marriage and his mental illness.

Queen Charlotte can be streamed on Netflix
Missy's Pick - "Daisy Jones & The Six"
Daisy Jones & the Six follows "a rock band in the 1970s from their rise in the LA music scene to becoming one of the most famous bands in the world and explores the reason behind their split at the height of their success." The series is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's book of the same name, which the author describes was partly inspired by her experience growing up and by watching Fleetwood Mac performances on television.

Daisy Jones & The Six can be streamed on Amazon

Did you know?

The smoke point of an oil is when it reaches its burning point, when it stops shimmering and starts smoking. The smoke point varies greatly among oils, ranging from less than 250°F to more than 500°F. The quality of the oil, the type of heat you’re using, how much air is in the oil container, and the free fats acid (FFA) content in that oil all impact smoke point. Oils with high FFA content are more susceptible to oxidative aging, become rancid more quickly, and smoke sooner when heated.
